Unexpected Champion Person Award!
On December 6, 2009 Woodstock Runners and Walker club had the annual Christmas Party and awards night at JP Pizzeria at Putney.
At the same time, aside from just being a Christmas Party/dinner its the annual Woodstock awards night too. We arrived at the venue pretty much on time or couple of minutes late but the party has not started yet. Its a small cozy joint.
After having our orders taken and drinks, our Woodstock president Roy started with the program by welcoming the emembers and their family and friends who came to attend the event. So the awards started.
All I know is (having low EQ at times and too impulsive and stubborn, I messed up with the surprise and did the computation myself) I won the handicap series for this year so I knew I was getting something yey! The Handicap scoring system is best of three of the 4 events. If you get to guess your finish time, and the closest estimate to actual wins. Not that I am the fastest in the club, It was a year of good guessing and attending the Handicap. I got 62 point It was a close call from Brendan and Anthony who came second. We got our wine, trophy and the cool club trophy.

What I was not expecting was to win the Champion Person Award. Which says: “That person who has done outstanding work for the Club throughout the year, with no thought of
reward.”
I never thought i will win this award, I know there are number of us who deserve this award as well, like Brendan, Martin, Colin, Rick, John, Barry.

I was also a part of the committee of finalizing the awards, however it is a surprise for most of the committee members and trying get the bias away someone neutral gets to tally and give their final choice without the presence of the nominee. I was told it is for doing the club’s newsletter. I am overwhelmed and grateful. it seem easy because I like doing it but sometimes i am not that agressive chasing articles or writeups I need, I do not feel too pushy however sometimes i do or I need to. There are some challenges in the background but I think it does make me learn more or grow mature to deal with such situation. I am grateful for the club and its members who nominated me and I am happy that most are happy for the December issue I just published. The award actually pressures me or inspires me to keep doing better and better on each publication.
Oh I love the trophy, it got the crest of the club. BTW all trophies were made by Derek White who got the President’s award. He is such an inpsiration to the club. Hope he recovers soon from his stroke.
We had a fun night with a very smokey dinner from grilling our own food on a voolcanic rock. It was good and well organized. Thanks to Lesley and Deirdre who organized the event.
Photos are compliments from Nadine Davies

Running and your carbon footprints
So you think by running/walking and cycling to work help reduce pollution?
That’s what i think myself. However recently I have been reading that running/walking and cycling produce more carbon emmission than driving a car or using public transpo. Disturbing isn’t it (yes if you are concerned of climate change). How could this be?
Since we think that because we don’t use gas and we use our own energy it is friendlier. But we actually use energy. Walking/running/Cycling to work uses energy from the food that gives us energy required to this activity. Fossil fuel is needed to produce this food we need. If you are a vegan from the water and nutrients and energy from the sun and the energy of the farmer that grows the veggies, to the energy to and from the grocery and your energy to prepare the food. Same thing when you are a carnivore, whe the animal eats etc. Wow I haven’t thought of this myself! Thus for example, we do need more food when we need to run 10Km to work everyday, then our energy resource is higher. The effort we exert is higher than driving or riding a public transpo and the Carbon dioxide we emmit while doing so, from breathing.
On the other hand on a public transpo/driving uses less energy since it uses less effort and time. And the argument goes on that it is better that we stay at home not travel, and do nothing because it will emit lesser CO2 emmision. What do you think?
However we should not think this way, if we eat local produce that does not require transport much, since Food are sustainable energy, specially if we are pro-organic, and the sources of our food use the right way of farming and livestock then it means balance. Driving on the other hand use oil and gas that are energy that is very hard to sustain and could take million years to make if it runs out. Only if their are more hybrid cars and public transpo. Also maybe consider not taking your Ipod/mp3 when running because it uses energy? Funny I never realize this either as I don’t see the bigger picture of what little devices cause.
So the question is, do you agree what this this study/Research is saying?

Watch out! 14th Age category World Triathlon 2009 Gold coast

The games theme is “fit, fun and forever young”.
Kerry, on our latest Woodstock rundown wrote an article about the World masters 2009, click here for more.
I did try to search for fellow Filipino on the games amongst the 28, 000 list in the 170 pages of competitors, unfortunately I am not able to find one
. Thinking bout it its bit dear 220 plus accomodation and plane ride
.
This event is worth watching. The oldest competitor would be 101 Years old! and master athletes who competed in past olympics re-visting their games. Note that the games showcase almost all Olympic games!
More information about the 2009 World Master’s games can be found here.
Good luck to the Woodstock and to all the competitors and hoping for good results!

Profile 9 Being fit and weight loss: Emmanuel Chandran
Last May a new runner joined the Woodstock for a 7Km handicap run around the Bay. Being me passive and shy to strangers :p I did not get the chance to say hi. The following day he ran with us at the Heart of the Lake at Bankstown and he finally joined Woodstock runners.
Then he diligently started running with the group every Thursday on Speed training. I try to run with him on the group together with Paul Witthaway. He is a sprinter and regularly plays soccer. He patiently waits for me plodding along and encourages me every lap.
One day while browsing at the coolrunning website, I saw him! i meant I saw his post that he was once overweight! I was curiuos as a cat and the next Thurday training night I meekly asked him if it was true, and he said it was! But anywa it gave me the opportunity to interview him! So I emailed him and asked him THE questions …
What is your heaviest weight? I was just under 140 kilos or possibly over but it seems so far away that I may have blocked some of it out of my memory!!
What is your current weight? I fluctuate between 70-72 kilos.
What was you lightest weight? During a slightly dodgy period in my life I dropped to around 63 kilos.
What made you realize you need to get back on track and being fit and healthy? I was around 21 years old, I ran to the bus and I got on and I realised I was breathless and my vision temporarily blacked out for a second or two….i was sweating and felt very unwell. That was it, I made my mind up then but it has taken me around ten and a bit years to get to my present stage.
Do you have a special diet? What is it? My diet is based around a little of everything and not too much of one thing. My daily pattern works like this
– a black coffee when I wake up (5am ), then I am off to the gym (6am), finish gym have a banana (7am ), get to work and have my breakfast which will be something like sultana bran or a cereal which has several different grain ( but careful about anything with too much sugar ) (8.00am ), I drink green tea throughout the day, take my multivitamins straight after breakfast, then at around 10am I have an apple, at 11am I have my lunch which something like a wrap with a handful of salad and some beef mince curry, at around 12.30 I have handful of nuts and dried fruit, at 2pm I have two small mandarins, at 3pm I have a pita wrap with a handful of salad with tuna and corn, at 4pm I have a couple of vita whole grain crackers, get home and either have dinner or go for a second gym session lasting no more than 30 mins which includes stretching and light cardio ( this session is reliant on how I am feeling so I won’t push my self too much, this session is meant to ease my muscles and bones ), when I get home at around 7pm I have again meal of say something like a small portion of brown rice with curry ( I LOVE CURRY!!!! ) salad and sometimes some vegetables with a glass of orange juice. And finally at around 8pm I have a mug of soya milk with a spoonful of protein powder to prevent muscle breakdown when I sleep. So there u go I am a little piggy.
Current sports you do, or other things/hobbies that you like doing? – currently my main focus is running and my cross training are focused on this. Would like to play football ( soccer ) but very aware of picking up needless injuries. I am starting to do more weight sessions in the gym. Already do bosu work, some ab work, cycle work, cross trainer, will start swimming soon in my new gym and I regularly go bush walking with a bush walking group ( at least once a month minimum ). The general idea is to keep myself active. I play cricket when I get opportunity. I play tennis sometimes during summer.
Can I ask for a photo of you before and after your weight loss gain?
As for picture of when I was chubby, sorry, its far too graphic to show anyone. Sorry. My mother keeps them locked up ( under my strict instructions ). I am sure it will be an inspirational tool for u, but it brings back some very bad memories for me…sorry mate. As for my present picture, I can one of those to you but did u want a head shot or some kind of Atlas type pose?? haha! Let me know.
Hope this is helpful mate.
In another incident I really tried to get his past picture (trying my luck and not being bad! as mentioned I just want to inspire people who think THEY CAN NOT) and I got this answer: “Mate I really look scarey! I am like a Tiger, with stripes all over me because of the stretchmarks so Imagine how I was before.”
Fair enough! Anyway I got snaps of him running the Bay Run, Breaking his first handicap with the Woodstock with a new record of 32 minutes! And he just recently ran the tough Willy to Billy Bush run.

Thanks Mani for giving me the chance to write your story online. May we bring inspiration to those who think they can’t
